Reactivity Definition in Chemistry

In chemistry, reactivity is a measure of how readily a substance undergoes a chemical reaction. The reaction can involve the substance on its own or with other atoms or compounds, generally accompanied by a release of energy. The most reactive elements and compounds may ignite spontaneously or explosively. They generally burn in water as well as the oxygen in the air. Reactivity is dependent upon temperature. Increasing temperature increases the energy available for a chemical reaction, usually making it more likely. Another definition of reactivity is that it is the scientific study of chemical reactions and their kinetics. Reactivity Trend in the Periodic Table The organization of elements on the periodic table allows for predictions concerning reactivity. Both highly electropositive and highly electronegative elements have a strong tendency to react. These elements are located in the upper right and lower left corners of the periodic table and in certain element groups. The halogens, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals are highly reactive. The most reactive element is fluorine, the first element in the  halogen group.The most reactive metal is francium, the last alkali metal (and most expensive element). However, francium is an unstable radioactive element, only found in trace amounts. The most reactive metal that has a stable isotope is cesium, which is located directly above francium on the periodic table.The least reactive elements are the noble gases. Within this group, helium is the least reactive element, forming no stable compounds.Metal can have multiple oxidation states and tend to have intermediate reactivity. Metals with low reactivity are called noble metals.  The least reactive metal is platinum, followed by gold. Because of their low reactivity, these metals dont readily dissolve in strong acids. Aqua regia, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, is used to dissolve platinum and gold. How Reactivity Works A substance reacts when the products formed from a chemical reaction have lower energy (higher stability) than the reactants. The energy difference can be predicted using valence bond theory, atomic orbital theory, and molecular orbital theory. Basically, it boils down to the stability of electrons in their orbitals. Unpaired electrons with no electrons in comparable orbitals are the most likely to interact with orbitals from other atoms, forming chemical bonds. Unpaired electrons with degenerate orbitals that are half-filled are more stable but still reactive. The least reactive atoms are those with a filled set of orbitals (octet). The stability of the electrons in atoms determines not only the reactivity of an atom but its valence and the type of chemical bonds it can form. For example, carbon usually has a valence of 4 and forms 4 bonds because its ground state valence electron configuration is half-filled at  2s2  2p2. A simple explanation of reactivity is that it increases with the ease of accepting or donating an electron. In the case of carbon, an atom can either accept 4 electrons to fill its orbital or (less often) donate the four outer electrons. While the model is based on atomic behavior, the same principle applies to ions and compounds. Reactivity is affected by the physical properties of a sample, its chemical purity, and the presence of other substances. In other words, reactivity depends on the context in which a substance is viewed. For example, baking soda and water are not particularly reactive, while baking soda and vinegar readily react to form carbon dioxide gas and sodium acetate. Particle size affects reactivity. For example, a pile of corn starch is relatively inert. If one applies a direct flame to the starch, its difficult to initiate a combustion reaction. However, if the corn starch is vaporized to make a cloud of particles, it readily ignites. Sometimes the term reactivity  is also used to describe how quickly a material will react or the rate of the chemical reaction. Under this definition the chance of reacting and the speed of the reaction are related to each other by the rate law: Rate = k[A] Where rate is the change in molar concentration per second in the rate-determining step of the reaction, k is the reaction constant (independent of concentration), and [A] is the product of the molar concentration of the reactants raised to the reaction order (which is one, in the basic equation). According to the equation, the higher the reactivity of the compound, the higher its value for k and rate. Stability Versus Reactivity Sometimes a species with low reactivity is called stable, but care should be taken to make the context clear. Stability can also refer to slow radioactive decay or to the transition of electrons from the excited state  to less energetic levels (as in luminescence). A nonreactive species may be called inert. However, most inert species actually do react under the right conditions to form complexes and compounds (e.g., higher atomic number noble gases).

Vulnerable Populations in Current Events Free Essays

Defining a Vulnerable Population A vulnerable population is any group that has been identified by an epidemiological or there study that classifies them at a higher risk than the general population from a specific or broad condition (Oxford Reference Online, 2011). The elderly population is considered a vulnerable population because they must face not only self-image disturbances related to an aging body, but also problems with mental and spiritual well -being as well. Barriers older adults must face are generated by these issues. As the population continues to grow, change, and age, there are numerous barriers the elderly face. Financially, the elderly population Is mostly surviving on a fixed or limited Income making It difficult at times to afford prescriptions. Doctor visits, and other healthcare related expenses. All of these issues place them in a state of vulnerability. Impaired or limited mobility creates yet another barrier especially for the elderly related to the side effects of an aging body. Consequently, they are more prone and apt to have injuries from falls leading to other serious debilitating healthcare issues. Many of the elderly population do not have the ability to drive safely or access to a vehicle due to their compromised health Issues related to aging such as poor vision, Alchemies, and severe arthritis: transportation becomes another barrier. According to Smith, et. L (2010), without proper transportation in place, communities will have a higher incidence of injuries and increased emergency response costs. Life experiences with Vulnerable Persons My parents are both of the elderly population. They both suffer from symptoms of an aging body. My dad Is hard of hearing, has chronic renal failure, terribly severe artless, thinning skin, and Impaired vision. My mother has Just recovered to a double knee replacement surgery because she had become immobile related to her severely arthritic knees. I have spent several years caring for them both and helping them through these difficult times of aging. I have noticed various discriminations by society of the elderly and the poor attitude towards them. People have very little patience, understanding, and compassion. I have also seen the moments of sadness, frustration, and depression that my parents have encountered related to having to race ten Tact’s Nat teeny are aging; teeny are no longer addle to phonically ay want teeny used to be able to do and think that they can still do. This has been the hardest for me to witness because I can remember when they were able to do anything they wanted to physically. They have both overcome many barriers, but continue to be vulnerable and I know that they’re level of vulnerability will continue to increase with the passing years to come. Knowing this, I continue to learn and look for ways to help and advocate for them. Importance of Louis Armstrong free essay sample

Armstrong was the greatest of all Jazz musicians. Armstrong defined what It was to play Jazz. HIS amazing technical ablest, the Joy and spontaneity, and amazingly quick, Inventive musical mind still dominate Jazz to this day. Only Charlie Parker comes close to having as much Influence on the history of Jazz as Louis Armstrong did. Like almost all early Jazz musicians, Louis was from New Orleans. He was from a very poor family and was sent to reform school when he was twelve after firing a gun in the air on New Years Eve. At the school he learned to play cornet.After being released at age fourteen, he worked selling papers, unloading boats, and selling coal from a cart. He didnt own an instrument at this time, but continued to listen to bands at clubs like the Funky Butt Hall. Joe King Oliver was his favorite and the older man acted as a father to Louis, even giving him his first real cornet, and instructing him on the instrument. By 1917 he played in an Oliver inspired group at dive bars In New Orleans Storyline section. In 1919 he left New Orleans for the first time to Join Fate Marbles band in SST.Louis. Marble led a band that played on the Stresses Millponds river boat lines. When the boats left from New Orleans Armstrong also played regular gigs In Kid Orgys band. Louis stayed with Marble until 1921 when he returned to New Orleans and played in Gouty Singletons. He also played in parades with the Allen Brass Band, and on the bandstand with Papa Selections Tuxedo Orchestra , and the Silver Leaf Band. When King Oliver left the city in 1919 to go to Chicago, Louis took his place in Kid Rosy band from time to time.In 1922 Louis received a telegram from his mentor Joe Oliver, asking him to Join his Creole Jazz Band at Lincoln Gardens (459 East 31st Street) in Chicago. This was a ream come true for Armstrong and his amazing playing In the band soon made him a sensation among other musicians in Chicago. The New Orleans style of music took the town by storm and soon many other bands from down south made their way north to Chicago. While playing In Olivers Creole Jazz Band, Armstrong met Lillian Hardin, a Plano player and arranger for the band. In February of 1924 they were married.Ill was a very intelligent and ambitious woman who felt that Louis was wasting himself playing in Olivers band. By the end of 1924 she pressured Armstrong to reluctantly leave his mentors band. He briefly worked with Lie Powers Harmony Syncopation before he moved to New York to play in Fletcher Henderson Orchestra for 13 months. During that time he also did dozens of recording sessions with numerous Blues singers, including Bessie Smiths 1925 classic recording of SST. Louis Blues. He also recorded with Clarence Williams and the Red Onion Jazz Babies.In 1925 Armstrong moved back to Chicago and Joined his wifes band at the Dreamland Cafe (3520 South State Street). He also played in Riskier Tastes Vendor Orchestra and then with Carroll Dickenss Orchestra at the Sunset Cafe (313-17 East 35th Street at the corner of Calmed Street). Armstrong recorded his first Hot Five records that same year. This was the first time that Armstrong had made records under his own name. The records made by Louis speak of Armstrongs creative powers. The band never played live, but continued recording until 1928.While working at the Sunset, Louis met his future manager, Joe Glasses. Glasses managed the Sunset at that time. Armstrong continued to play in Carroll Dickenss Orchestra until 1929. He also led his own band on the same venue under the name of Louis Armstrong and his Stoppers. For the next two years Armstrong played with Carroll Dickerson Savoy Orchestra and with Clarence Jones Orchestra in Chicago. By 1929 Louis was becoming a very big star. He toured with the show Hot Chocolates and appeared occasionally with the Luis Russell Orchestra, with Dave Peyote, and with Fletcher Henderson.Armstrong moved to Los Angels in 1930 where he fronted a new band called Louis Armstrong and Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra. In 1931 he returned to Chicago and assembled his own band for touring purposes. In June of that year he returned to New Orleans for the first time nice he left in 1922 to Join King Olivers Creole Jazz Band. Armstrong was greeted as a hero, but racism marred his return when a White radio announcer refused to mention Armstrong on the air and a free concert that Louis was going to give to the cities African-American population was cancelled at the last minute.Louis and Ill also separated in 1931. In 1932 he returned to California, before leaving for England where he was a great success. For the next three years Armstrong was almost always on the road. He crisscrossed the U. S. Dozens of times and returned to Europe playing in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Holland and England. In 1935 he returned to the U. S. And hired Joe Glasses to be his manager. He had known Glasses when he was the manager of the Sunset Cafe in Chicago in the sass. Glasses was allegedly connected to the AY Capons mob, but proved to be a great manager and friend for Louis.Glasses remained Armstrongs manager until his death in 1969. Glasses took care of the business end of things, leaving Armstrong free to concentrate on his music. He also hired the Luis Russell Orchestra as Louis backup band with Russell as the musical director. This was like going home for Armstrong, because Russell Orchestra was dad up of predominantly New Orleans musicians, many of whom had also played with King Oliver. The band was renamed Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra and was one of the most popular acts of the Swing era. Glasses put the band to work and they toured constantly for the next ten years.During this period Armstrong became one of the most famous men in America. In 1938 Ill and Louis finally got a divorce. Louis then married Alpha, his third wife. The endless touring was hard on their marriage and they were divorced four years later, but Armstrong quickly remarried Lucille and they remained married for the rest of his life. For the next nine years the Louis Armstrong Orchestra continued to tour and release records, but as the sass drew to a close the publics taste in Jazz began to shift away from the commercial sounds of the Swing era and big band Jazz.The so-called Dixieland Jazz revival was Just beginning and Be Bop was also starting to challenge the status quo in the Jazz world. The Louis Armstrong Orchestra was beginning to look tired and concert and record sales were declining. Critics complained that Armstrong was becoming too commercial. So, in 1947 Glasses fired the orchestra and replaced them with a small roof that became one of the greatest and most popular bands in Jazz history. The group was called the Louis Armstrong Alistair and over the years featured vocalist Villa Middleton, and Earl Hines. The band went through a number of personnel changes over the years but remained extremely popular worldwide. They toured extensively traveling to Africa, Asia, Europe and South America for the next twenty years until Louis failing health caused them to disband. Armstrong became known as Americas Ambassador. In 1963 Armstrong scored a huge international hit with his version of Hello Dolly. This number one single even knocked the Beetles off he top of the charts. In 1968 he recorded another number one hit with the touchingly optimistic What A Wonderful World.Armstrongs health began to fail him and he was hospitalized several times over the remaining three years of his life, but he continued playing and recording. On July 6th 1971 the worlds greatest Jazz musician died in his sleep at his home in Queens, New York. The Music of the Hot Five and the Hot Seven is considered by most critics to be among the finest recordings in Jazz history. On November 12th, 1925 Louis Armstrong made his first records that bore his name as bandleader. The songs on the Coke 78 RPM record ere My Heart, and Cornet Chop Sues.

There were neither any real work done at WJM-TV, nor deadlines or ratings. Yet, somehow, at the age of six, I had a vague sense of my desire to be a television producer I wanted to be Mary Richards. And so began my quest to satisfy what felt like an innate love for film and writing a journey that is still just beginning. My first attempt to satisfy my inner-Mary came at seven with my television debut as a Grouchkateer on â€Å"Sesame Street.† As the director instructed us to jump up and down and shake our heads, I whirled in circles, flailing my arms in blissfully ignorant rebellion. Amid days upon days of wacky film jokes and countless â€Å"lights-camera-action,† we would stop to make an edit or take a coffee break. Working with actors from the Screen Actors Guild was no stroll down â€Å"Sesame Street.† It took more than enough takes to recognize the relationship that bonds my mini-Sony DV with my flimsy tripod, that fuses Final Cut Pro with Avid DV Express, and that merges my beloved fixations of filming and writing. Things have come a long way from the time I sat in front of that TV wanting to be just like Mary to the present as I sit at my editing station in school or at my desk writing a scene at all hours of the night. Where will the next reel find me? I don’t know. But I’m sure of one thing: In some way, it will be something like Mary.
